At first glance, Wapol (often phonetically rendered as "King Wap") is a caricature of greedy, childish despotism. He eats everything (literally), bans all doctors except his own, and is defeated rather unceremoniously by a pirate who hadn’t even awakened his Devil Fruit. He is the punchline of a political joke. However, for those who follow the manga’s cover stories and deep lore, Wapol is the protagonist of one of the most surprising, uplifting, and commercially successful romantic storylines in the entire series.

Wapol arrives at the holy land of Mary Geoise as the king of Black Drum. He is there to represent his country. However, his wife, Komane, is not with him. Why? Because she is pregnant.

He defeats the villain and turns to Komane. Dressed in scrap, covered in soot, he does not ask for a kiss. He asks her to be the queen of his new kingdom. Komane, seeing the potential for innovation and genuine loyalty beneath the gluttony, accepts.

For a man who once saw people as food, Wapol is now terrified of childbirth. He panics. He runs through the corridors of power, knocking over nobles, desperate to find a doctor. In his panic, he stumbles upon the covert meeting of , Sabo , and the Revolutionaries. He accidentally witnesses the attempted assassination of the Celestial Dragons and the revelation of the Empty Throne.

The romance culminates in a bizarre, yet touching, scene. To save Komane from her captors, Wapol uses his Devil Fruit power not to destroy, but to create . He eats a cannon, a car, and a pile of scrap metal, then fuses them with Komane’s jewelry box. The result? A massive, grotesque, yet functional (later known as the "Wapometal" mech).
